FAQ

What is “shared mobility”?

“Shared mobility” represents transportation options that are shared among users, such as flexible or on-demand transit (e.g., NICE’s Elmont Flexi), bike sharing (e.g., Citi Bike, Bethpage Ride), scooter sharing (e.g., Lime), ride hailing (e.g., Uber, Lyft), and car sharing (e.g., Zipcar).

What is the purpose of the Nassau County Shared Mobility Management Plan?

This study will identify opportunities for introducing new and enhanced mobility services to complement and extend the reach of existing transit services, thereby improving transportation options for residents, workers, students, and visitors, particularly those populations that are underserved. In addition to addressing longstanding gaps in the transportation network (e.g., first-mile/last-mile connections, limited north/south transit options, etc.), the Shared Mobility Management Plan will further Nassau County’s goals to promote social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic development.

Who is leading this initiative? What other agencies/organizations are involved?

The Nassau County Department of Public Works – Planning Division is leading the development of the Shared Mobility Management Plan with a consultant team led by WSP USA Inc. A Stakeholder Committee has been established to represent regional and local interests, including other Nassau County departments as well as organizations representing social equity, civic, environmental, business / economic development, and transportation interests. Additionally, municipalities and technical advisors will be consulted to provide input and play a role in guiding the direction of the project, complementing the role of the Stakeholder Committee and opportunities for public participation over the course of the project.

What parts of Nassau County will be involved in this project?

This project is a Countywide study. The Shared Mobility Management Plan will serve as a guiding document for the County as well as a resource for local municipalities regarding the implementation of short-, mid-, and long-term actions and strategies for developing shared mobility services and augmenting infrastructure and policy to enhance mobility. Additionally, the work in this study will identify one or more shared mobility pilot projects, which will be selected for implementation based on an evaluation framework that includes equity considerations, different options for the locations served, transportation mode and technology, and service characteristics.

What type of work will be involved in this project?

The development of the Shared Mobility Management Plan will involve an evaluation of different options for the short-, mid-, and long-term future. This approach will enable the definition and comparison of a range of future scenarios based on different combinations of variables, potentially including downtown/community revitalization, infrastructure investments, demographic changes, and post-pandemic commuting patterns.

How does this project relate to other Nassau County initiatives?

This project complements other recent and ongoing Nassau County initiatives that promote the goals of social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic development. For instance, the Nassau County Department of Health is undertaking a health disparities study, the Department of Public Works continues to advance “complete streets” projects (such as in Downtown Hicksville), and the County is committed to reimagining the Nassau Hub to reflect a new post-COVID reality and create an Innovation District on the property surrounding the Nassau Coliseum.
